Project description:

Within the Interreg GREW project, DVOKUT‑ECRO provided expert support to the Brijuni National Park Public Institution through systematic monitoring of aquatic ecosystems in the wetland areas of Veliki Brijun Island. The activities were aimed at improving the understanding of how these sensitive habitats function and at preparing expert inputs that supported decision-making on conservation and management of natural values.

The research covered three water bodies in the Saline and Bari wetland areas, with field sampling and analyses carried out at least four times per year. Particular emphasis was placed on biological groups relevant for assessing water status—aquatic protists and invertebrates (meiobenthos and macrobenthos)—including the determination of abundance and diversity indices. In parallel, field measurements of key physico-chemical water quality parameters were conducted (e.g., temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, oxygen, etc.).

As an outcome of the activities, professional deliverables were produced, including a final report with a status analysis and recommendations for ecosystem improvement, a proposal of optimal methodologies for long-term monitoring, photo documentation, and a final public presentation.
